Font Licenses

Copyright and licensing are important topics when it comes to fonts. At Befonts, we allow designers and foundries to upload and share their fonts, and they confirm that they have the right to distribute the files they submit. We also review fonts periodically to help ensure that the listed license information is accurate whenever possible.

If you believe that your copyright-protected work has been published on Befonts without authorization, you may submit a copyright infringement notification. Such requests should only be sent by the copyright owner or an authorized representative acting on the owner’s behalf.

Font License Guide

The license type of a font determines how you may use it. Before using any font, please read the included license files, visit the author’s website, or contact the author directly if you are unsure.

1. Personal Use Only

This license generally allows the font to be used only for non-commercial and private purposes. Typical examples include:

  • Personal craft or scrapbooking projects
  • Graphics for a personal blog or non-monetized website
  • Invitations for family and friends
  • School or hobby projects
  • Making a T-shirt for yourself or as a free gift

You may not use a personal-use font in projects that generate revenue, promote a business, or are created for a paying client unless the author explicitly allows it.

2. Commercial Use Allowed

This license indicates that the font may be used in projects intended for business, marketing, client work, or profit-making activities. Examples may include:

  • Logos, branding, and business cards
  • Websites for companies or commercial products
  • Books, packaging, posters, and advertisements
  • T-shirt or merchandise designs for sale
  • Client work where you are being paid for the design

Even when commercial use is allowed, the author usually still owns the font itself. In most cases, you may use the font in your project, but you may not resell, redistribute, rename, or claim the font as your own.

3. Demo / Trial

A demo or trial font is a limited version provided for testing, previewing, or evaluation. It may include restricted character sets, missing glyphs, or limited usage rights.

  • Usually intended for preview purposes only
  • May not be licensed for full personal or commercial use
  • Often requires purchasing the full version for real projects

If a font is marked as Demo / Trial, you should assume that additional permission or a paid license is required before using it in final work.

4. Open Source / OFL

Fonts under an open source license, such as the SIL Open Font License (OFL), are generally free to use, study, modify, and share under the terms of that license.

  • Commonly usable for both personal and commercial projects
  • May allow modification and redistribution
  • Must still follow the terms of the specific open source license

Please read the exact license included with the font, since open source does not mean “no rules.” Attribution, reserved font names, or redistribution requirements may still apply.

5. Public Domain

A public domain font is generally free from copyright restrictions and may be used without needing permission from the original creator.

  • May typically be used for personal and commercial purposes
  • May often be modified and redistributed
  • Usually does not require payment or attribution, although credit is always appreciated

However, please make sure that the font is truly in the public domain in your jurisdiction, as legal status may vary depending on country and source.

6. Donationware

Donationware fonts are usually free to download and use under conditions set by the author, but the author asks users to make a voluntary donation.

  • May be free for personal use
  • May sometimes also allow commercial use, depending on the author’s terms
  • Often encourages supporting the designer through donations

Because donationware terms vary widely, always check the included license or the designer’s website before use.

Important: In most font licenses, the designer or foundry still retains copyright ownership of the font file itself. This means you are generally not allowed to sell the font, redistribute it as your own, or claim authorship unless the license explicitly permits it.

The license shown above the download button on Befonts is provided as a helpful indication only. The most reliable source is always the license file included in the download archive or the information published by the author.

If no author or license is indicated, that does not mean the font is free to use without restriction. It simply means we do not currently have enough information.

If you are unsure whether a font may be used for a specific purpose, especially in commercial, branding, resale, or client work, we strongly recommend reviewing the official license carefully or consulting a legal professional.
