BC Barell Font Family

BC Barell Font Family is a distinctive sans-serif typeface originally designed by Jiří Rathouský in the early 1970s for the visual identity of the Thermal Hotel in Karlovy Vary. Influenced by Brutalist architecture, the typeface is characterized by its unique barrel-shaped curves, which appear consistently in rounded characters across uppercase, lowercase letters, and numerals, while straight strokes remain clean and highly legible. Revived digitally by Briefcase Type, BC Barell has been carefully refined with balanced proportions and improved stroke contrast, preserving the spirit of the original design while enhancing its functionality for contemporary use. The type family offers multiple styles—including Regular, Inline, Condensed Thin, and Extended Black—and supports variable font technology, making it a versatile choice for branding, editorial design, signage, and modern graphic applications.
