Agatha Font Family

Agatha Font Family

Agatha Font Family, a typographic masterpiece with a story as intriguing as an Agatha Christie novel. The journey began in 2003 when Ian Party stumbled upon a literary treasure in a Lausanne bookshop – La Comédie du jour sous la République Athénienne by Albert Millaud, illustrated by Caran D’Ache. This discovery served as the catalyst for an enduring source of inspiration that reshaped the trajectory of type design.

Inspired by the unique typeface found in Millaud’s work, Ian Party’s creative odyssey commenced with the creation of the first weight, Regular, in 2003. Over the years, the font evolved, with italics introduced in 2006, a version crafted for L’Officiel in 2010, and another iteration in 2012. Now, witness the birth of Agatha, the culmination of a lifetime of work and a testament to the evolution of aesthetic sensibilities in design.

What drew Ian to the original font was its romantic and almost floral essence – evident in the iconic g, round a, serifs with an interior curve, y, and the curved shapes in W, V, A, M, N, v, w. Agatha reflects the beginnings of art nouveau, a style that seamlessly marries romanticism with modernity.

Agatha’s DNA traces back to Amazonia Typeface, reflecting a dynamic reinterpretation that embodies a blend of neoclassicism, 19th-century Didot, and the spirit of Amazonia. This typeface is a testament to a lifetime of experimentation and a dedication to craft, featuring a modern and romantic approach that sets it apart.

In 2023, we released a completely new design which brings Agatha to the forefront as a variable font, featuring three axes: weight, width, and contrast. From Thin to Black, Condensed to Extended and from contrast to low contrast, Agatha Variable Typeface offers 18 fonts that encapsulate the essence of its journey. Available in variable font format, as well as OTF and WOFF2 formats, Agatha is poised to be a versatile companion in your creative endeavors, blending the charm of history with the innovation of the present. Two variables fonts, 180 styles, a narrative of evolution, on demand.
