Introducing Barber Display Font is an ode to the glorious art of Vietnamese signpainting. Hand-painted signs, which once dominated urban areas, now remain on storefronts of very few businesses in the Cho Lon area. This typeface was rendered based on one of such remnant—a barbershop’s sign in District 5, Saigon circa mid-1980s. By late 2018, the old barbershop’s sign was no longer visible hidden behind a newer, extended metal one.
The chromatic, all-caps, display typeface consists of 4 font variants. When layered, they create the dimensional typographic effects with lighting and shadows, similar to that of the original hand-painted sign. This style was largely influenced by European lettering in the 19th and 20th century.
