TT Tsars Font is a collection of serif display titling fonts that are stylized to resemble the fonts of the beginning, the middle and the end of the XVIII century. The project is based on title fonts, that is, the fonts that were used to design book title pages. The idea for the project TT Tsars was born after a small study of the historical development of the Cyrillic type and is also based on Abram Shchitsgalโs book ยซRussian Civil Typeยป.
Atย the very beginning ofย the project, weย had developed aย basic universal skeleton for the forms ofย all characters inย all subfamilies ofย the family, and later onย weย added styles, visual features, artefacts and other nuances typical ofย the given period onto the skeleton. Yes, from the historical accuracy point ofย view itย might beย that such anย approach isย not always justified, but weย have achieved our goal and asย aย result weย have created perfectly combinable serifs that can beย used toย style anย inscription for aย certain time period.
The TTย Tsars font family consists ofย 20ย fonts: 5ย separate subfamilies, each ofย which consists ofย 4ย fonts. Each font contains 580ย glyphs, except for the TTย Tsars Eย subfamily, inย which each font consists ofย 464ย characters. Instead ofย lowercase characters inย the typeface, small capitals are used, which also suggests that the typeface isย rather aย display than text one. Inย TTย Tsars you can find aย large number ofย ligatures (for Latin and Cyrillic alphabets), arrows and many useful OpenType features, suchย as: frac, ordn, sinf, sups, numr, dnom, case, onum, tnum, pnum, lnum, salt (ss01), dlig.
Time-related characteristics ofย the subfamilies are distributed asย follows:
โข TTย Tsars Aโthe beginning ofย the 18th century (Latin and Cyrillic)
โข TTย Tsars Bโthe beginning ofย the 18th century (Latin and Cyrillic)
โข TTย Tsars Cโthe middle ofย 18th century (Latin and Cyrillic)
โข TTย Tsars Dโthe end ofย the 18th century (Latin and Cyrillic)
โข TTย Tsars Eโconditionally the beginning ofย the 18th century (only Latin)
TTย Tsars Aย and TTย Tsars Bย families (both the beginning ofย the 18th century) have different starting points: for TTย Tsars Aย itย isย Latin, for TTย Tsars Bย itย isย Cyrillic. The development ofย the TTย Tsars Aย family began inย Latin, the font isย based onย the royal serif Romain duย Roi. Cyrillic alphabet isย harmoniously matched toย the Latin. The development ofย the TTย Tsars Bย family began inย Cyrillic, which isย based onย aย Russian civil type. Characteristic elements are the curved one-sided serifs ofย triangular characters (A, X, Y), drops appear inย the letterย ะ, the middle strokesย ะ andย P are adjacent toย the main stroke. Latin was drawn toย pair with Cyrillic. Itย isย still based onย the royal serif, but somewhat changed: the lettersย B andย P are closed, and the upper bar ofย the letterย A rose. This was done for the visual combination ofย Cyrillic and Latin and atย the same time toย make aย distinction between TTย Tsars Aย and TTย Tsarsย B.
TTย Tsars Cย is now the middle ofย the 18th century. Cyrillic alphabet itself did not stand still and evolved, and byย the middle ofย the 18th century its forms have changed and become toย look the way they are shown inย this font family. Latin forms are following the Cyrillic. The figures are also slightly modified and adapted toย the type design. Inย TTย Tsars C, Cyrillic and Latin characters are created inย parallel. Aย distinctive feature ofย the Cyrillic alphabet inย TTย Tsars Cย is the residual influence ofย the flat pen. This isย noticeable inย such signs asย ะ, ะ, K. The shape ofย the letters ะ , ะฆ, ะฉ, ะญย isย very characteristic ofย the period. Inย the Latin alphabet, aย characteristic leg appears atย the letter R.ย For both languages, there isย aย typicalย C characterised byย anย upper serif and the appearance ofย large, even somewhat bolding serifs onย horizontals (T, E, ะ, L).
TTย Tsars Dย is already the end ofย the 18th century, when with the development ofย printing, the forms ofย some Cyrillic characters had changed and turned into new skeletons ofย letters that weย transposed into Latin. The figures were also stylized. Inย this font, both Cyrillic and Latin are stylistically executed with different serifs and are thus logically separated. The end ofย the century isย characterized byย the reduction ofย decorative elements. Straight, blueprint-like legs ofย the letters ะฏ, R, K, ะ. Serifs are very pronounced and triangular. Eย andย ะญ are one-sided onย the middle horizontal line. Aย very characteristicย C with two serifs appears inย the Latin alphabet
TTย Tsars Eย isย aย steampunk fantasy typeface, its theme isย aย Latinized Russian ะกivil type (also referred toย asย Grazhdansky type which emerged after Peter the Greatโs language reform), which includes only the Latin alphabet. There isย noย historical analogue toย this typeface, itย isย exclusively our reflections onย the topic ofย what would have happened ifย the civil font had developed further and received aย Latin counterpart. Weย imagined such aย situation inย which the civil type was exported toย Europe and began toย live its own life.
