Lang Gothic Font

AT Lang Gothic Font simplifies AT Lang, excluding the serifs to create a workhorse sans that is at once warm & direct. For individual styles, interactive type testers, and more information, check out the Lang Gothic homepage.

This family is a sans-serif take on AT Lang, and the main effort here has been navigating what exactly that means. Lang is based fairly directly on specific lettering on a monument within the Green-Wood Cemetery of Brooklyn, NY. Lang Gothic, meanwhile, has no specific historical reference, but is rather a new imagining of forms from Lang. Even so, in this version, I have taken a broader look at sans-serif brownstone lettering in Green-Wood, and adjusted the forms of Lang Gothic to hew a little closer to the examples that do exist.

What this means in practice is that I have removed wedging from horizontal bars in letters like “E” and reduced flaring in the terminals of round characters like “s.” Additionally, I’ve added a couple of stylistic sets that echo common quirks in brownstone lettering: a “Barless G” (ss05) and “Blocky Punctuation” (ss06). I’ve also totally revised the default punctuation, evolving it from glyphs borrowed from AT Lang into simpler shapes that are a more seamless match for AT Lang Gothic.
